Speaking with your legislators is a perfect example of democracy in action. They can only serve community needs if they know what you care about. If science is what you care about, check out this online panel discussion with members from the Georgia General Assembly. They shared with us about why they want to hear from you and how you can effectively communicate with them.

Panelists

Sen Jen Jordan, District 6 (Sandy Springs, North Atlanta, and Smyrna). She is a lawyer who has been in office since 2017.
She is Chairman of the Special Judiciary Committee and serves on the Higher Education, Appropriations, Banking and Financial Institutions, and Interstate Cooperation Committees.
Rep Erick Allen, District 40 (Smyrna and Vinings). He is a consultant and has been in office since 2019.
He serves on the Economic Development and Tourism, Human Relations and Aging, Insurance, Banks and Banking, and Code Revision Committees.
Sen Kay Kirkpatrick, MD, District 32 (including East Cobb and Sandy Springs). She is an orthopedic hand surgeon who has been in office since 2017.
She is Chairman of the Veterans, Military, and Homeland Security Committee and serves on the Insurance and Labor, Judiciary, Health and Human Services Committees.
Rep Jasmine Clark, PhD, District 108. (Lilburn, Mountain Park – Gwinnett County). She has a PhD microbiology and has been in office since 2019.
She serves on the Interstate Cooperation, Budget and Fiscal Affairs Oversight, and Higher Education Committees.

Amy Sharma

Amy Sharma, PhD, is Executive Director of Science for Georgia. Dr. Sharma has worked in many aspects of the engineering field: Product Management at Predikto, spearheading the development of the big data vertical and managing a $1M annual Independent Research and Development (IRAD) program at GTRI, working as an Assistant Professor in Medical Physics at the University of Western Australia, working as an Assistant Program Manager for the National Science Foundation, receiving political and outreach training as a AAAS Science and Technology Policy Fellow, obtaining a PhD in Biomedical Engineering at Duke University, and designing hardware logic for advanced server microprocessors at IBM. Dr Sharma enjoys difficult challenges, jobs with overly long titles, communicating scientific and technical ideas to non-scientists, brewing her own beer, and smoking various foods.
